Gas detection for industrial applications
The current market for gas detection products is served by a broad range of techniques and technologies, some of which match closely the demands of the sensor users; others display limitations thereby creating opportunities for innovation from sensor suppliers. The industry is also facing increasing economic and legislative pressure; these pressures contribute further to the need for innovation as sensor suppliers seek to create solutions which combine higher levels of economic value with increased performance and robustness.
Avacta's gas detection advantages
Because Avacta’s gas detection technology operates on the principle of optical absorption within a sensitivity enhancing optical cavity, it does not display the same limitations as some current technologies and also offers a number of core performance improvements:
· High sensitivity: By using a high finesse optical cavity the path length through which the absorption (detection) occurs is extended from half a meter up to several km resulting in dramatically increased sensitivity of detection.
· Highly selective: Observation of the sharp spectral features characteristic from IR absorption spectroscopy by utilisation of a narrow bandwidth lasers produces ultra high specificity identification of target gases – eliminating any cross sensitivity problems which can be experienced with other techniques.
· Failsafe operation: The ability to detect gases by using solid state optical hardware instead of electro-chemical techniques eliminates problems with sensors showing ‘normal’ status in failure, sensor drift, poisoning, sensor sleeping and environmental instability (with humidity and temperature).
· Long lifetimes: With no electro-chemical consumable element sensor lifetimes are extended with servicing and ongoing maintenance costs significantly reduced.
· Rapid response: Detection occurs with a typical observation time of 20 seconds, detection speed can be increased to 1s with a factor of 10x reduction in sensitivity.
Considerations for industrial applications
Avacta’s CEAS technology can be tailored to meet the requirements of almost any gas detection application. Variables for different applications typically include:- Number of target gases: Single or multiplexed
- Detection target(s): H2O, H2S, CO2, NH3, HF, NOX, CH4, plus many more
- Background gas: Natural gas, air, O2, CO2, plus many more
- Environmental demands: Ambient temperature, pressure, moisture etc
- Operational demands: Fixed / portable, continuous / sampling, inline / offline, etc
