Russell joined the Avacta group as Chief Operations Officer in October 2005. He gained his undergraduate degree in Applied Biology with Biotechnology at the University of Luton and a Masters by Research in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Leeds. In his early career after a short spell in academic research in plant molecular biology, Russell entered into commercial science and spent several years ending as a biotechnology study director within a NYSE quoted contract research organisation under GLP, ICH and other regulatory guidelines designing, validating and conducting studies for the bio-safety of biologics. During this time Russell helped contribute to the characterisation of a standard Adenovirus Reference material for RCA under the direction of the Adenovirus Reference Material Working Group.
Following this period, he then joined Techtran Group Limited (subsequently acquired by IP Group plc) where he spent 2 years working with various University life science spin-outs in strategic business development and operational direction.
Russells main scientific background is in the areas of molecular biology, tissue culture and virology.
