Infra-Red Absorption

Infra-Red Absorption
  • Well established probe of molecular structure
  • Depends on the absorption of infra-red light by molecular vibrations
  • Resulting ‘infra-red absorption spectrum’ is characteristic of the structure and environment of the molecules in the material.
  • Information similar/complimentary to that supplied by Raman spectroscopy.

Facilities Include:

a range of modern Fourier transform infra-red absorption spectrometers and sampling accessories

Applications Include:

  • Identification of unknown materials
  • Measurement of molecular environments
  • Determination of molecular orientation
